Holy crap guys, as you can tell by the title of this blog post I did some digging into the screen time section of my iPhone settings. I had been getting notifications from it a couples times the last couple of months and usually just brushed it off because to be honest I didn’t want to know how much time I spent on my phone because I knew it was going to be a LOT. Being a social media manager forces me to be on my phone a ton just like if you were at a desk job for 8 hours, I am on my phone for a ton of hours. The type of work is just different. Anyway, let’s get into the part of how many hours I spend on my phone in a week and figuring out where I spend all that time!
I spent almost 12 hours on my phone this week and as I am typing this it is only Saturday. WOAH. That is a lot of hours. I wanted to think a minute before digging deeper and figuring out, where do I think I spend the most of that time? I immediately knew of the top 3 contenders: Instagram, Tik Tok, and YouTube. I was right.
- TikTok: 5 hours
- Instagram: 2.5 hours
- YouTube: 1.5 hours
- Facebook: 1.4 hours
- Messages: .5 hours
- Snapchat: .3 hours
- Twitter: 15 minutes
Now, I knew TikTok was going to be high because sometimes I lose the time when I am on it and I usually watch it for awhile each night before bed which I should really switch it out for a book instead. Also, I knew Instagram was going to be in the top 3 because I have been engaging on there a TON more lately trying to get my engagement up and it is a huge part of my work. YouTube is one of my huge guilty indulgences that allows me to shut my brain off for a second and feel less stressed. So, I don’t mind that one at all! I usually watch a tv show or a YouTube video!
Seeing the overall of the screen time really made me reflect on how much time I spend looking at a screen and indulging in other people’s lives, photos, and videos. It can really mess with the reality of my own life by increasing comparison, doubt, and insecurities. However, it also does increase my creativity, motivation, and perseverance. But after some more reflection, I realized that there are some things that I should keep in mind to eliminate some screen time and help with the screen time I do have to endure! So, here are some things I am going to try and implement to do so!
- Wear blue-light blocking glasses more often
- Read before bed
- Timers: each app gets a certain amount of time each day and I should really try to stay in that time limit, especially TikTok
- More multitasking: I think that because I am on my phone it can mean so many hours wasted but if I am watching videos while cleaning, cooking, or organizing it doesn’t have to be such a negative thing!
- Look at the screen time channel throughout the week to be sure I am in tune with how much time I am spending
I know this blog post is a little different but I definitely think all of us can relate to this and probably have the screen time information so you can do some reflecting too! Social media has really taken over our lives and it can be a great resource and tool but it can also be taking our time! Keep that in mind!
